When involved in a collision, a variety of injuries can result to your neck. Whiplash affects the soft tissue(s) located in your neck and can also be referred to using the interchangeable terms, neck sprain” or “neck strain”. Characteristic of whiplash are multiple related symptoms occurring subsequent to damage to the neck area, which are usually the result of the neck being bent backwards or in an unnatural position, bringing the bones too close together. This phenomenon is also referred to as flexion.

Whiplash is a common result of a car accident and may include injury to inter-vertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots related to the neck and spine. Symptoms such as neck pain may present directly subsequent to the injury or may present in a delayed fashion, which can even unexpectedly reveal itself days after an accident. In addition to neck pain, neck stiffness can present due to injuries incurred in neck muscles and ligaments, which is known as myofascial injuries.
